A Step-By-Step Guide To Setting Up Your GMB Profile

How to Claim Your Business’s GMB Listing

In today’s digital (and mobile) world, a business must invest time in growing and maintaining their online presence. Google is the largest search engine in the world, and is what the majority of the population use, when they are searching for products, services, or information online. Due to Google’s massive market share, it only makes sense to make sure your business has its profile listed. AND…it’s absolutely FREE!

If you are looking to set up a Google My Business profile for your business, or need to claim an existing profile, then keep reading!

Step 1: Visit the Google My Business Website & Sign-In or Create a New Profile

The first step to claiming your Google My Business profile is to sign in to the GMB Dashboard and enter your business information. Note: If there is already a profile that was created, but you do not have access, you can click on the listing itself where it states ‘Own this business?’ (see image below). Regardless if there is a profile or not, you will still need to follow the following steps.

Step 2: Input Your Business Name OR Add Your Business

After you sign-in to your Google account, you will be asked to ‘Find and manage your business’. Simply type your business name and select your business from the results that automatically populate.

Step 3: Fill Out Your Business Information

Enter the Correct Name of Your Business

You will now be asked to input more information about your business.

First, you will be asked to enter the correct name of your business.

Choose Your Business Category

Next, you will be asked to choose the category that best describes your business. At this moment, you will only be able to choose one category, so choose the best option that describes your business; later on, you can add up to 3 additional categories within the GMB dashboard.

State Your Business Type – Physical Location vs Service Area Business

The next step is to let Google know whether your business has a physical location that customers can visit, or if you are a service area business that serves multiple geographic areas nearby (i.e., local plumbing contractors, lawn care service, etc).

*Choose the best option that describes your business.

*Service area businesses ONLY:

Step 4: Add Your Business Contact Information

Enter Your Business’s Primary Phone Number & Website URL

Lastly, you need to add your business’s contact information. Enter your primary phone number and website URL. After you finish completing the setup process, you can add additional numbers and appointment links if applicable.

Step 5: Complete Your GMB Profile Setup Process

Lastly, you will be asked to verify your mailing address. Verification takes only a few seconds to complete. However, you will have to wait about two weeks on average to receive your verification postcard. You can always do this another time if needed, but it’s best practice to complete the verification process to make the most of your GMB profile.

Congratulations, you have now successfully claimed your Google My Business listing! Now, all you have to do is optimize your profile for completeness!
